5 Tip for Spring Cleaning Your Garage

It’s almost that time a year again. With spring right around the corner, you may be daydreaming about warm weather, spring flowers, and outdoor activities. For homeowners though, the changing of the season also brings about another opportunity: spring cleaning!

Here are 5 tips for spring cleaning your garage so you can maximize your space and stay organized throughout the spring, summer and fall.

1.     Make a Garage Spring Cleaning Plan

Spring cleaning your garage can usually be done in one weekend, unless of course you don’t have a plan in place. If you haven’t cleaned or organized your garage in a couple years, then you definitely want to utilize a plan. Creating a checklist prior to the clean can help you stay on task. Delegate tasks to family members or break your garage into sections and clean one at a time.

 2.     Declutter Your Garage

Add this to the top of your checklist. Your garage probably has items in it that you haven’t seen in years, and once you do you’ll ask yourself “why did I ever want to save this?”. Create 5 different piles to help reduce the amount of clutter you have in your garage:

-       Keep

-       Toss

-       Recycle

-       Donate

-       Sell

You’ll be amazed at how much better you’ll feel when you can finally see the walls in your garage! Add some shelves or storage bins to really maximize your new-found space.

3.     Wipe Down and Sweep Out Your Garage

If you haven’t cleaned your garage in some time, the floor of your garage is filthy! Pick up a shop broom and you’ll find that out fast. Sweeping out your garage and wiping down items or shelves that have collected dust is a great way to keep the items you store in your garage clean and fresh.

4.     Clean & Inspect Your Garage Doors & Opener

Now that you’ve removed/organized the clutter in your garage and cleaned/wiped down any shelves or items it’s time to wash your garage door. Use a hose to rinse your door and then wipe it down using a sponge, dish detergent and warm water. You can use this method on both sides of your garage door.

After a clean it’s also a good idea to check that your garage door system is operating correctly. Inspect your door’s sensors, chain drive and hardware to make sure the sensors are centered, your chain is rust free and you’re not missing any hardware.
