Like most things in and around your home, if your home has a garage door, you need to ensure that it’s safe to operate for you and your family. A garage door can be the largest piece of mechanical equipment that your home has. Here are some suggestions to keep your door safe throughout the year.

Keep Your Garage Door Opener in a Safe Place

Most garage doors are now remote-controlled, with some even utilizing smart technology to open and close the door (smart locks). Because the garage door often separates your garage, and even the inside of your home in some cases, you’ll want to be extra careful with where and how you store your garage door opener.

-       Keep your garage door opener away from children

-       Do not leave your garage door opener in your car

-       If you are going out of town, lock your garage door temporarily so that it disables your opener

Routinely Inspect Hardware

Your garage door, like your car, should be routinely inspected to ensure that its mechanical features are safe. Checking for rusted chains, securing safety cables, and double-checking to make sure all the nuts and bolts are secured is a great way to prevent any accidental damage for opening and closing your door.

Inspect and Test Your Safety Sensors

If you own a mechanical garage door then you’ll know they have sensors that detect obstructions when closing your garage door. This feature prevents the door from closing on an object that could severely damage your door or hurt someone. Check your sensors to make sure they are clean, centered, and that the hardware on your sensors is securely fastened. You don’t want to leave for the day only to discover that your garage door didn’t close. This can be avoided by routinely cleaning your sensors and inspecting its hardware.
